This is an excerpted introduction to a newsletter ghostwritten for a legal tech thought leader:
Hello Friends and Colleagues,
Suppose you work at your current job for 10 years. As things stand now, would that mean you have 10 years of experience in your role? Or would it be more accurate to say you have the same one year’s experience 10 times?
Now let’s imagine the breadth and length of a river in relevance to the importance of work in our lives.
Some people nurture a small stream that trickles lightly through the forest of their lives. For others, a mighty river dominates the landscape.
We can leave and reenter the river at any time. Thank goodness, because there are so many rewarding trails to explore and mountains to climb!
Yes, it can be more difficult to pierce some points of reentry than others.
Those returning after a long adventure on land may want to jump back in at a familiar bend in the river where they know they can handle the current.
Sometimes people switch to new career roles, in effect voyaging into powerful rapids that can sweep them under in an instant.
I may have capsized my boat or run against the riverbank a time or two. 😁
But we can always right ourselves again, especially if we pursue the skills and education that complement our talents and most especially if we keep moving forward.
Think of all the adventures to be had!
I don’t want to drag my boat all the way back to where I started, float past the same banks I’ve already seen, and get hung up on the same sandbars again and again.
And I certainly don’t want to do that 10 times over by staying in the same, unchanging role for 10 years straight.
Whatever your role is today, take command of your ship!
Making purposeful decisions and pursuing the skills and experiences that spark your interest and draw on your natural talents will help you tap into momentum that continually propels you to new and exciting experiences.
I hope you enjoy your travels, wherever they lead, simply because they are YOURS!
